In a bold move, Mercedes has given up on design and ergonomics and slapped more screens on the dashboard of its latest generation E-Class. The commitment to having more screens than any other automaker in a car signals the end of Mercedes giving a shit.
“Market research shows us that our customers want to be more and more distracted while while feeling like the technology in their car does much more than show them where to go and listen to music, podcasts, or audiobooks,” says Gorden Wagener, chief design officer for Mercedes-Benz Group AG. “Our new infotainment system is really just a computer that can run high level computational AI or the latest Call Of Duty video game, but our customers just want to know that it can and be able to brag about it at the bar in the golf club. Nobody is really going to generate silly images or play video games while sitting in the front of a car.”
When asked if this was a sign Mercedes was close to fully autonomous driving tech, Wagener simply shrugged and said, “Sure. If you like. I really don’t give a shit any more.”
